What to Do When You Are in a Slump: How to Use the Time Effectively

Many highs and lows come with running a business. At some points in your business, you will have more work than you know what to do with, and other times, you will be afraid your business is not going to survive because you do not have enough work. What helps voice over artists succeed in their business is knowing that business will pick up again. By not letting the slow periods of your business get you down, you will be able to get through them with confidence and be ready to tackle more work when it does come along.

Being patient can be difficult when you are used to working so hard. You may be restless because you are accustomed to being so busy. The good news is that you don’t have to sit still just because you do not have a lot of voiceover work to do. You can use time effectively to get yourself ready for when business does pick up again.

The following are ways you can use your time effectively:

  • Balance the books. When you are busy working, it can be difficult to keep track of everything that is coming and going out of your bank account. Take the free time to go through it all and make notes on how you can better use your money. This way when clients start asking for work again, you will have a better sense of how well you are doing with your revenue.
  • Work on yourself. When you are busy, you may not take care of yourself as well as you should. You may not exercise as much, get enough sleep, or eat healthy foods. During slow times, get back on track with taking care of yourself. Get plenty of sleep, eat well, and get back on an exercise regimen. When business starts to pick up again, not only will you be energized and feel great, but you will likely value yourself much more and be more likely to continue caring for yourself.
  • Organize your office or studio. When you have voiceover gig after voiceover gig, you may not take care of your paperwork as well as you should. You have projects with deadlines, and those are the most important tasks to take care of. When you find yourself with free time, organize all of your paperwork. You will feel great when it is done because you will not feel so overwhelmed when you start back up with new clients or more work from old clients.
  • Work on some of your projects. As a voiceover artist, you may have started to work on some of your own projects. Those projects can easily be swept to the side when clients approach you with projects that pay. While business is slow, work on those projects again. That way you will feel as though you have used the downtime effectively to help you grow yourself and your business.

If you have been dealing with a lack of business lately, consider implementing these tips on what to do to use time effectively. Get started today because you never know how long you will have before you are busy again.
