Writing voice over scripts can be difficult. You may not know what to write, how to write it, and what it’s going to sound like when the voice over uses it. Don’t worry; there are some tips you can use to write effective voice over scripts easily.
Write the Way You Speak
Many people don’t realize that voice overs are talking to people. They are communicating with the people who are watching and listening to them. It’s like voice over artists are having a conversation in front of your consumers. This is why you want to make sure the artist is speaking to consumers in the same way they would converse in person.
Writing the way you speak can be difficult. The best way to do this is by speaking aloud about what you want the voice over artist to say. You can talk to someone you know while you’re doing it or just look into a mirror. While you’re talking either record it or stop after a couple of sentences to write it down.
Be Blunt
People these days are busy, so they have short attention spans. This is why you need to give your consumers the information they need and want quickly. Get right to the point in your script. If you’re selling something, tell consumers what you’re selling, why it’s great, and how they can get it.
You can shorten a lengthy script by editing your sentences. They should be short and provide information that leads to more information consumers want to know. Treat your voice over script as a roadmap taking your consumers from just thinking of buying from you to wanting to buy from you.
Use Silence Effectively
Don’t think you have to be choppy with your script because you’re trying to give people as much information as possible in the least amount of time. Include pauses in your scripts, especially when a good point has just been made. For example, asking a question and then signaling the voice over artist to pause is a great way to engage your listeners. It gives them time to think about the question you’ve asked and sparks their attention.
Stick to One Voice
The 2nd person works best for most voice over scripts, but there are exceptions. Some people prefer 1st or 3rd person to tell an interesting story. It depends on what you believe will grab your audience. When you do choose a voice, stick with it.
You should also only stick to one tone. If you want it exciting, it should be that way throughout the script. This way you won’t confuse your listeners.
