Do What You Don’t Know to Succeed with Your Voiceover Skills

When was the last time you did something different in your voiceover career? If you’re like most people, you have not done this in a long time or ever. Unfortunately, that has probably kept you away from achieving maximum success. If you’re ready to make a change, keep reading.

Expanding on Your Voiceover Skills

Voiceover skills are highly transferable. This is one of the many reasons I love being one. I can take my ability to change the sound of my voice to work as an announcer, book narrator, or in movies. When I first started, I only did television shows, but throughout the years, I had some opportunities come my way. Through those occasions, I was able to pick up additional skills. If it were not for taking the risk with those opportunities, I would not be where I am today.

Taking new types of voiceover work means doing something you may not believe you are capable of since you have not tried it before. This does not mean you should not do it, though. The only way you’ll know for sure that you can’t do something is by doing it.

Always remember: You only learn when you fail, not when you succeed.

How to Take the Risk

Fear of failure can paralyze you. It can make it incredibly difficult for you to perform. This is why it’s important that you try to mitigate that feeling as much as possible.

How do you that?

Change your perspective. Taking a risk should be exciting. Think about it – you’re about to do something that may lead to many other opportunities. How exciting!

Yes, the possibility that you may not do well is there. However, just because you find out you can’t do something; it doesn’t mean you cannot do what you already know. You’re a good voiceover artist in the niche you’re in now. With the new opportunities, you’re trying to do the same for another niche.

Remember back to the time when you began doing voiceover work. Was it easy when you first started? Did you have to go past your comfort zone? Yes, of course, you did! You are doing that again by working on something new. This something new can lead you to a different level of success in your career.

Get Started

You may be thinking, “You’re right.” “I have to do something new to see what else I can do, but how do I start?” The first step is to identify some of your voiceover skills that can be transferred to other niches of voiceover. If you’re doing voiceover work for authors, you may be able to take the ability to express emotions accurately through voice dubbing work for film producers. If you’re doing announcing work, you can take the ability to articulate messages clearly and apply it to helping companies create instructional videos.

Once you know the skills that can be applied to other niches, you can market yourself. You should tell prospective clients how much experience you have in your niche, and let them know that you feel as though you have what it takes to make their project a success.

Stay positive, try new things, and achieve a higher level of success!
